A borehole job usually has four parts: siting (choosing where to drill), drilling and casing, a yield test to see how much water the hole delivers, and the pump, tank and filtration installation. Ask for each part to be priced separately so you can compare quotes properly.
Drilling is normally quoted per metre, and the final depth isn't known until the driller reaches water, so ask what happens to the price if the hole is dry or deeper than expected. A good contractor will explain this before starting.
Water from a new borehole should be tested before you drink it. Many drillers can arrange a lab test and recommend filtration based on the results. Larger water use may also need to be registered with the Department of Water and Sanitation.
